KVC Constructors Commences Construction on Frank Gehry-Designed Miami Beach Parking Facility
Scott Rakow Youth Center Undergoes Renovation
KVC Constructors Working With the City of Miami Beach to Update Popular Facility
MIAMI BEACH. Fl., Dec. 16, 2009 -- Construction is now underway on upgrades to the City of Miami Beach's Scott Rakow Youth Center. KVC Constructors, a Miami-based general contracting, construction management and design/build firm, is Construction Manager at Risk for the project, which is the second phase in an overall reconstruction of the celebrated hub for children and teen activity.
Extensive renovations managed by KVC include construction of a new entry-way, new restroom facilities, a new elevator and a much-needed expansion of the parking lot. The old ice rink (a new one was completed during phase I of the renovations in 2006) is being converted into a new multipurpose area and the center's bowling lanes will also be updated. The entire center is being brought up to current ADA standards and KVC is implementing life-safety and accessibility enhancements throughout. The Center will remain open for most programming, as the construction work is being done in phases.
"A lot of thought went into this project," said Charles Carreño, Director of Miami
Beach's Capital Improvement Projects Office, "Early-on, we decided that we would keep the Youth Center open so that children and teens could continue to have a safe place to be after school. It might take longer to complete than if we shut it down altogether, but we're doing this for the kids. This is the smartest way to accomplish this $7.5 million-total project."
KVC Constructors provided preconstruction services for the Scott Rakow Youth
Center renovation project and the company was awarded the $4.5 million construction
contract in April 2009. Construction commenced in August and will be completed
in October, 2010.
The Scott Rakow Youth Center, located at 2700 Sheridan Avenue, Miami Beach, was
built in 1976 to serve the families of Miami Beach. The center features an ice-skating
rink, outdoor swimming pool, bowling lanes, gymnasium, arts and crafts facilities,
a game-room and play areas. It has been described as "a hidden treasure" by
Frommer's Travel guide.
